Tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe have embraced biodiversity in their prospectuses as pointed out by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education new policy dubbed ‘Education 5.0’ which seeks solutions to numerous socio and economic problems by implementing novel and unique ways to tap and utilize local natural resources.

Bondolfi Teachers’ College Principal Kizito Chitsama in his address at the institution’s 2019 Graduation Ceremony on the 23rd of October held under the theme ‘Transforming teacher education for industrialization and sustainability through knowledge, skills, and services’ noted that as a way of adopting education 5.0 a biogas plant is being constructed at the institution.

“Our mandate as an institution of higher learning is to implement government policy and seek solutions to our numerous socio-economic and the heritage philosophy is a critical component of education 5.0 as it emphasizes innovation and thus challenges and mandates teacher training institutions to seek and embrace novel and unique ways to tap and utilize local resources,” highlighted Principal Chitsama.

“Accordingly plans to install a biogas plant at the institution to boost power provisions are close to fruition and it is our favored hope and anticipation that upon completion this plant will further propel the institution’s vision and appreciation to embrace industrialization for sustainability in huge, meaningful and significant ways,” added Principal Chitsama.

Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Hon Dr. Amon Murwira in his keynote address as the guest of honor at the ceremony renowned education in the twenty-first century should evolve and focus on innovations by developing local resources.

“We focus on education that produces goods and services to sustain ourselves by growing our own food, and we should know that our landscape and climate allows small grains for better yields, droughts have been prone because we have a focus on grains that are not drought resistant,” remarked Minister Hon Dr. Murwira.

“Our education should teach us to utilize local resources including wild species as currently grapes are favored over amarulas, wheat over millet and sorghum whereas education 5.0 entails producing and manufacturing what we have as a nation,” added Minister Hon Dr. Murwira.

“Education is an industry of value chain, not a process of standing in front of students thus serving human needs has become the future of education as it encompasses food, health, loyalty, mutual respect, shelter, water and sleep being facilitated by innovations,” said Minister Hon Dr. Murwira.
